During regular Internet browsing you may sometimes encounter some porn sites that will suddenly pop up. This can happen without you clicking anything from the website that you have just visited. Other times you click on a link that looks harmless but which will actually lead to porn sites. If this can happen to you, you can be quite sure that the same thing can happen to your kids. As an adult you know what to do and just close the browser window on the porn site. But for some children who are very curious, this is an open invitation to look at the porn site. They may claim that they did not purposely look up the site and it just popped up. That may be true but to prevent this from happening again then you have to install some security measures to block these porn sites from being accessed. Take a look at some of the tips on how to block porn sites on your computer without installing additional software.
- Open an account with OpenDNS. You can sign up for a free basic OpenDNS account if you only have one computer in the house that is share by multiple users. The website will only ask for your email address, a password, where you learned about OpenDNS and where you are going to use it.
- For those without a router and using Windows XP for your operating system, you can click Start > Control Panel > Network Connections. In the dialog box, select your network connection and right-click it and choose Properties. In the Local Area Connection dialog box, select the General tab. In the window under the label ‘The connection uses the following items” locate the Internet Protocol or the TCP/IP item and select it. The item will be highlighted. Click on the Properties tab to open another dialog box. Select the radio button beside the “Use the following DNS server addresses. You will be presented with two options In the Preferred DNS box, type 208.67.222.222. The cursor will move to the right box after you have filled up the first one. You do not have to type the periods between the numbers. In the “Alternate DNS server option type 208.67.220.220 then press OK.
- If you are using a router, open the router menu and look for the DNS preferences and type the codes given above. Press save and exit the router menu. Reboot your computer to effect the changes. You can get the specific instructions for your brand and type of router from the OpenDNS website.
- Once you have set up an account with OpenDNS you can already set the filters you want to block porn sites. Sign in to your account and go to the settings section to select the level of filtering that you desire. You have three choices here. Select Low if you only want to block porn and phishing websites; Moderate to block phishing websites, adult sites, gambling sites and pornography and choose the High filter if you want to block all types of porn sites, gambling and other illegal activity sites, social networking and video sites. Click the Apply button when you are done.
- You also have the option to block only specific porn sites by going to the manage individual domains section in OpenDNS and add the website addresses that you want to block then click the Add domain button.
It will take about two hours for the filters and blocking settings to take effect. Check if the settings have been done properly by searching for a porn site. If you get the message that says the particular website is blocked or the website address is not allowed on your network then you are sure that the filters that you have set are working properly.
